Shripal Shah, DBA
Founder, Exaptation AI. (SF Bay Area)
Doctor of Business Administration | Pepperdine University
Shripal has worked in Silicon Valley for 20+ years in finance, strategy development, sustainability, and innovation research roles. His diverse background, combined with an innate curiosity for science & business, helps make exaptation accessible and relevant to various stakeholders.
Shripal is on a life-long mission to make resources multi-potential such that all future assets have exaptability embedded at the design stage that enables the emergence of future functions. When all resources hold multiple latent functions, scarcity turns into abundance! Leveraging AI today and Quantum Computing in the future will allow humanity to realize this multi-potential dream.
His doctoral dissertation (EGS) and continuing post-doc research holds promise for manifesting growth-by-emergence.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Exaptation is an evolutionary principle noting how certain traits, characteristics, features, and resources acquire new functions.
It was originally described as a shift of function by Charles Darwin in his seminal book ‘The Origin of Species’ in 1859. Evolutionary scholars suggest that most forms have evolved through exaptations for their current functions.
-
In 1982, Stephen Jay Gould and Elizabeth Vrba developed the modern definition and coined it exaptation.
Ex-aptus is fitness (apt) through form (ex). In relation, Ad-aptus is fitness (apt) through design (ad). Adaptation and Exaptation are interlinked processes that drive evolution. In modern times, we can simply describe it as 'one resource, many functions.'
-
Beyond the feathers in birds and business examples, the human larynx is considered an exaptation that enables sound, and eventually, speech.
The initial function of the larynx was to protect airway and to prevent food from entering the lungs. Larynx was not naturally designed to produce complex vocal sounds that became modern human speech and language.
-
Yes.
In the past 150 years since Darwin proposed the evolutionary mechanism, the core idea termed as exaptation has been used in many different scientific fields to explain the emergence of new forms and functions. These include biology, genetics, anthropology, linguistics, architecture, cognitive science, pharmaceuticals, technology, manufacturing, management, and many other disciplines.
-
Exaptation plays a role for any organization where a resource or an asset is available for use. Applications range from the science and technology fields to business and economics.
For example, the internet was initially designed to solve a secure communication problem for military and defense agencies. Since the development of the WWW, it has been exapted for information sharing, shopping, entertainment, finance, education, and many other functions generating trillions of dollars in annual value.
-
Uber is one example of exaptation when it expanded from Rides to Eats.
The firm leveraged existing Uber App resources that served a transport function for a new delivery function through intentional experimentation. The innovative processes Uber undertook to discover and implement the exaptive solution helped grow a second business line approaching $15b in annual revenue.
-
Exaptation AI + EGS leverages existing growth processes already embedded in most firms.
Searching for exaptations would require some initial commitment to evaluate assets and resources and develop one or more hypotheses that can be experimentally tested. Thus, doing this work requires careful assessments and some novel effort.
-
Exaptation Growth Strategy (EGS) is a new strategic management theory to help firms and entrepreneurs discover exaptations and generate new growth.
Through a specialized process encoded in Exaptation AI, we can evaluate assets and resources and develop unique initiatives. The EGS model combines existing and emerging best practices to speed up the innovation process.
-
Any organization or individual is capable of finding exaptations and leveraging them for their intended goals.
For organizations that are not driven by growth and profitability, the end goals may be different; however, the process remains the same. Non-profits, research-led organizations, and other NGOs play a prominent role in cases where resources were exapted for significant impact.

There are multiple ways to work with us. 1) Mastery, then integrate custom AI tools inside your org. 2) Traditional advisory services + ExAI. 3) Bespoke work via ExAI.
Each of these approaches is designed to generate value for your org. What used to be done in months and quarters for hundreds of thousands of dollars can now be done in days and weeks for a fraction of that investment.
-
Exaptation AI does one thing: Discover valuable new functions of your assets. We are focused on getting better at this one thing and helping your org with asymmetric outcomes.
We do not charge hourly rates for polished PowerPoint decks or tediously long reports that never get read in full. Our work + output is focused on maximizing the outcome rapidly at fair cost.

We are not here to tell you how you should run your growth strategy or even which markets to enter.
We are here to collaborate and advise. We are open-minded, patient, and curious. If the growth answer is obvious, then there is little value to gain. So expect the work between us to go deeper beneath the surface to find the most valuable and impactful opportunities.
